9 Ways to Improve Your Cold Call Connect Rate (And Double Your Conversations)

Jump to a chapter:

The hardest part of cold calling isn't the rejection, it's that it sometimes feels like you're calling into the void.

There's nothing more frustrating than making dial after dial after dial, only to get voicemail after voicemail after voicemail. You can build a dream list of carefully researched prospects, but if you can't get them on the phone, you probably won't be landing many meetings.

Sometimes cold calling can feel like you're staring into the abyss and the abyss won't even bother to stare back.

Solving that is the focus of this toolkit - helping you get more live conversations without having to make more dials, using the following tactics:

1Get Every Direct Dial You Can
  • Use waterfall enrichment to run your list through multiple providers
  • Ask your RevOps team to auto enrich every lead that enters your system
  • Pick data providers who offer direct dials
2Avoid Getting Spam Blocked
  • Test your number to make sure it's marked as spam
  • Rotate your numbers when calling from a power dialer
  • Avoid calling bad numbers over and over again
3Mark Your Tracks As You Dial
  • Tag your numbers
  • Abide by the law of diminishing dials
  • Scrape the barrel one more time for key accounts

If you're already using AI in your workflow, we'll show you exactly how FullEnrich works with Claude to take each of these tactics even further.

Ready for more live conversations? Let's jump in.

1
Get Every Direct Dial You Can 📞

When you're calling, prioritize contacts with mobile and direct lines. These numbers have a higher connect rate and allow you to skip gatekeepers and dead end phone trees. It's generally OK to call mobile phones in the US for B2B solicitation.

For the record, some prospects will get annoyed that you called their cell, but for every one of those there will be another thirty you only ever got to speak with because you called their cell. Those are good odds.

Spending precious cold calling time dialing non-direct numbers means you'll be spending a lot of time with dial trees and fighting gatekeepers (they won't tell your prospect that you called, sorry to break it to you).

Here's how you can make sure you're stacking your list with the best possible lead data:

  1. Use waterfall enrichment to run your list through multiple providers: No one data provider has a monopoly on contact data. Databases with waterfall enrichment let you use data collected by multiple data providers and help you get the numbers most likely to be direct dials.
  2. Ask your RevOps team to auto enrich every lead that enters your system: Not every marketing form will capture your prospect's phone number. With auto-enrichment, even if your prospects aren't submitting phone numbers, you'll be able to get them.
  3. When waterfall enrichment isn't an option, pick data providers who offer direct dials: When you're in the buying cycle for your next data provider, get your sales rep to be explicit — when they say they can provide phone numbers, are those cell phone numbers and direct office lines? Or a dial tree that routes through the front desk at a satellite office?

Build Your Call List Without Leaving Claude

Skip the Sales Nav tab. With FullEnrich connected to Claude, type something like:

"Find me 25 VPs of Sales at US companies with 50–500 employees who are actively hiring."

FullEnrich pulls the contacts, verifies the mobile numbers, and returns your list directly in the chat. From there, ask Claude to draft a cold call opener for each contact based on their LinkedIn activity or recent company news. Now you'll have your list AND your talk track ready to rock.

The right data partnership should make you feel extremely confident that you're getting the numbers with the highest chance of picking up.

Finding those direct dials is honestly half the battle when it comes to improving your connect rate. Next up — how to make sure more of those direct dials actually answer.

2
Avoid Getting Spam Blocked

We've all been there: you're enjoying your day, checking your email, eating your lunch, when your phone buzzes and an unfamiliar number flashes across the screen.

A prospect calling you back? The pharmacy telling you about an RX you need to pick up? You forgot your kid at carpool again?

But then you see those two blessed words: "Spam Likely." Decline call. Back to lunch.

The sad twist here is that we've all been the sales rep making that dial in the first place. Getting your phone number tagged as "Spam Likely" is the connect rate kiss of death.

Here's how to avoid getting tagged as spam likely:

  1. Test your number to make sure it's not marked as spam: Have you ever cold called yourself? Seriously, try it now from your dialer. Are you coming up as spam? You know your intentions are noble and pure, but phone service providers can put a damper on that optimism.

  1. Rotate the number you call from: Wireless carriers monitor unusual spikes in call volumes, so many sales engagement platforms and VOIP providers let you buy and rotate additional lines so that you don't tarnish your number.
  2. Avoid calling bad numbers over and over again: Similar to the last point, carriers will monitor which numbers continue to repeatedly dial disconnected or fax lines — and those numbers are more likely to be marked as spam.
Get your dials squeaky clean. Or else.
FullEnrich's advanced phone validation makes sure the numbers you call actually ring when you dial them and score whether the person you're calling is likely to pick up. Prioritizing these numbers makes it easier to maintain your own phone number's reputation.

Now that your number is clean and clear, you can dial with confidence.

But once you start dialing, there's even more juice you can squeeze to drive an even higher connect rate. That's up next.

3
Mark Your Tracks As You Dial

POV: You're 132 dials into your fourth call blitz of the week and see that you're dialing a phone number that you could swear you've seen 12 times already. Suddenly you get the sinking feeling that you just wasted a whole new chunk of time on dials that might not be yielding any fruit.

That feeling exists when you aren't properly tracking your "dial tracks."

The best reps know that part of having a good prospecting list is pruning bad numbers so that they're only calling the numbers with the highest likelihood of picking up.

Here's how to maintain good list hygiene manually:

  1. Tag your numbers: Steal this color-coding system for numbers that didn't connect:
    • 🟢 = "right person, right number" — If you're trying to reach Bill and the voicemail says "Hi this is Bill, I'm sorry I missed your call…", that's a green light. You missed them, but this is definitely their number.
    • 🟡 = "not sure, try once more" — If the voice on the voicemail is the generic robot voice, give it another try on the next call blitz.
    • 🛑 = "confirmed bad number" — The endless dial tone, the "she hasn't worked here in 10 years," the sound of a fax machine screeching. Once you've marked a number as 🛑, you should never waste a dial on it again.

  1. Abide by the law of diminishing dials: If you can imagine that "cold calling" is "consuming calories," dialing 'yellow' phone numbers is the "eating potato chips" of cold calling. Not bad as a treat, terrible if it's the basis of your diet. When your 'yellow' numbers don't yield a conversation after 5 calls or so, mark them 'red' and move on.
  2. Scrape the barrel one more time for key accounts: When prospecting to an account that you just know would be a perfect fit, those 'red' numbers are your sign to go back to the database and (1) see if there's more data to find on your prospect and (2) just find more prospects at that account!

Map the Org When Your Original Contact Goes Cold

When you've thoroughly worked your contacts at a must-land account and nothing's worked, don't walk away. Instead, try going wider.

Give Claude (or ChatGPT, OpenClaw… wherever your agents live) the company name and a one-sentence description of what you sell, and ask it to map the buying committee. With FullEnrich connected, it can surface other decision-makers inside that account — new hires, adjacent team leads, executive sponsors — with verified contact data attached.

There's a good chunk of things you can do BEFORE you ever even pick up the phone, and a few things you can do even as you're dialing, to make sure your future call blitzes yield some fruitful conversations:

  • Start with good data: make sure the data provider you partner with provides direct dials, has waterfall enrichment to catch the ones they miss, and you're enriching every lead coming into your CRM.
  • Don't let your phone be spammy: test your number regularly, rotate the number you're calling from, and don't keep calling bad numbers.
  • Keep good notes: know who you've called, how many times you've called them, whether or not the phone number is actually theirs, and make sure you're really trying to hit every lead into the account.
